Solar Home Systems
Solar electricity - known in the industry as photovoltaics or PV- involves producing electricity by converting the clean energy in natural sunlight to useful power.
A typical home system is made up of solar panels (that convert the light to DC electricity), wires (to carry the current) and an inverter (a device to convert DC electricity to household AC). Isn't it exciting to be able to produce your own electricity?
Modern systems in urban areas are connected to the electricity network ("the grid") and are therefore called 'grid connect systems'. In this way, when the system produces more electricity than you are using at that moment, surplus electricity is exported to the grid, solving the storage problem. The amount you produce and export then comes off your total electricity bill (the payment system differs from electricity company to electricity company).
Government Assistance - Be quick as it won't last
Currently, the Federal Government, through the PVRP scheme, is offering a rebate of up to $8000 on eligible systems. The main criteria are that you own and live in your home, and that the system is installed by BCSE accredited installers. For more information, visit the PRVP page (click here). We will help you do the paperwork.
Systems from Sydney Energy Cooperative
The Cooperative offers great value solar installations on offer to homes, schools and clubs in NSW and ACT. Solar engineers with BCSE accreditation will install your system with experienced electricians.
1kW home systems fully installed by the Cooperative start at $3980 INCLUDING METER*. Your new system will incorporate 6 premium solar panels, including BP and Conergy and a German SMA inverter. BP is Australia's largest and most established manufacturer of solar panels. Conergy is a world leader in the solar and renewable energy industry.
Australian made 'Latronics' inverters are available as an optional extra. Larger systems are also available at competitive prices.
The price of the system is for standard homes, and is after redemption of rebates and assigning associated RECs to the cooperative. We keep extras to a minimum, but a small add-on applies for flat roofs, slate tiles and cathedral ceilings. All of this can be discussed at your site assessment.

Sydney Energy Cooperative
Qualified
The Sydney Energy Cooperative has a team of full-time qualified solar engineers, all of whom studied under world leading experts at the prestigious School of Photovoltaic Engineering at UNSW
Committed
Coop engineers and staff practice what they preach. Coop staff regularly use solar products in their own homes, and are committed to travelling by bicycle and public transport as much as possible. The coop refuses speaking exhibitions, conferences, or speaking opportunities when flying is required.
Supply
The Cooperative is a reseller of the BP range of products and supplies equipment at discounts well below retail price. Please email for prices.
Design
Do you have a specialised need that does not fit in the above categories? Our creative and knowledgeable engineers can let you know how to power it with solar and how much it will cost. We have experience building solar powered mobile phone chargers, sound systems, lighting equipment, battery chargers and more.
Cooperative Information
You can read more about the cooperative and its operations in the about section.
General Information
For general information about generating solar electricity in your home, please refer to the Australian Greenhouse Office and Business Council for Sustainable Energy joint publication Electricity from the Sun.
FURTHER DETAILS RELEVANT TO THE OFFER
* METER Sydney Energy Cooperative arranges for the installation of a suitable meter at no extra cost, unlike other vendors. Note that should the meter box be damaged, irregular, cramped, placed illegally or of insufficient size, remedial work may be required. The cost of potential works can be discussed at the site visit.
Definitions
Standard Home - Many members live in single storey houses with corrugated iron or common terracotta tile roofs, with ceiling cavity access. This situation is the lowest cost installation environment for household photovoltaic systems.
Suitable Home - This describes the type of home that is best suited to solar production. The best homes for solar production have space on a north facing roof angled at 20 to 40 degrees. However, flat roofs and other orientation types may still be suitable; contact us to discuss. Ideally, the roof should be unshaded, but we can help to assess the impact of partial shading using the Pathfinder(R) tool in the course of a site visit. A house that is shaded all day will not be suitable.
Net - This refers to the actual out of pocket expense after all rebates have come back. In fact, the total value/cost of the systems is actually more than $12000, but that homes eligible for a rebate of $8/W (max $8000) and that assign RECs to the cooperative will pay only the difference between the cost price and the rebates - for standard homes this amount is $3980
RECs - Renewable Energy Certificates Renewable Energy or Greenpower produced by your system and supplied to the network attracts a premium compared to standard electricity. Based on historical data, the production of the system is estimated and certificates are created to evidence the generator and its expected output. For more information, visit the Office of the Renewable Energy Regulator. Sydney Energy Cooperative markets these on your behalf, and deducts from the cost of the system.
